an allegorical photo installation by pat graham & melanie standage
The Wildebeest is a photo installation that mixes time & distance &
memory. It is a tale of collective consciousness with debris. Inspired
by first person narratives, be it literary or filmatic, this is a story
about modern life & visual consumption. Given the vicarious nature of
our contemporary existence, it speaks to the images that help define
our experiences & ourselves.
This photographic narrative uses a perspective through-the-lens to tell
its tale. The focal point emanates from Arsenal in north London but
follows the couple across the highways & bi-ways of America & western
Europe as well as backwards through recent history (personal, cultural,
political).
True to form Graham/Standage deliver a density of images (all
handprinted in their basement). Coursing around the gallery the
installation engulfs the viewer with visions from their journeys.
Borrowing from the video or cyber perspectives of Shinya Tsukamoto's
Tetsuo/Ironman or David Cronenberg's Videodrome, the exhibition
promises vicarious thrills & a sidecar view on the lives of these
photographers.
As usual content themes are iconic: rock & roll, cities, sexy ladies,
ice-cream, garbage, trees, skies & small dogs. Interspersed are awesome
landscapes marking the roads & the routes they log.
