dirty pigeons NYC . apr 2 - 29 . 2005
curated by joanna virello

Indie Rock Royalty meshes with the London art scene when Dirty Pigeons NYC appears for it's much anticipated group art show. For the first time ever, the painting of nine New York artists will be displayed at the highly recognized gallery 96 GILLESPIE. The Dirty Pigeons NYC movement was formed by an invitation from gallery directors Graham & Standage to New Yorkers Joanna Virello and Gibb Slife to organize this most unique show. During the early Spring of the 2004 the two started to organize a diverse group of established painters, each who has made a name for themselves in the arts and have a few that happen to have strong ties to the music scene. The Dirty Pigeons NYC that signed on are: New Yorker art director Gibb Slife, indie rock drummer for Les Savy Fav Harrison Haynes, Kevin Willis, Joanna Virello, Kat Irannejad, Michael Cline, Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Daniel Lefcourt, and Travis Lindquist. Suddenly one pack of talented artists who had never met one another were now bonded with a common mission...get to London with their latest and greatest artwork.

In the tradition of The Ashcan School, the infamous group of artists who captured the feel of turn-of-the-century New York City through hard times and intense portraits of everyday life, this group of rag tag artists have the same mission.

Departing from the staid portraiture and genteel images of the twentieth century, these artists focused on urban scenes, exotic culture, religion and icons. Their intent, however, is not muckraking social commentary but the portrayal of urban vitality and producing a trans -Atlantic show of American art in the 21st Century that would upset London at a time when Yanks are not very popular. Their paintings as a group show will exhibit the gritty realism, informality, and rapid execution of visual reportage. With such unprepossessing titles as Bush-on Bush and Strangelove, The Dirty Pigeons, and their paintings capture the imagination. Also known as the New York Heels, they are forecasted by critics as "revolutionary hustlers" and the "the apostles of oils." The other, originally pejorative label-Empire Art School- has become the standard term for this young yet important group from Gotham.
