96 gillespie is a small but vital contemporary art gallery in london, england. dedicated to encouraging a dialogue between US/UK artists it has become a significant venue for american artists in the uk.
1st season introduced london to artworks by:
cynthia connolly & artists/architects from the acclaimed rural studio architectural outreach programme in alabama. (www.ruralstudio.com)
gee vaucher was the artist with CRASS, the UK anarcho peace punk outfit from the 70/80's. we released her latest artbook, 'animal rites' with an premier exhibition of original work from the book. (www.southernn.com/crass)
allison schnackenberg is an uk based american record label director with a background in punk rock journalism. she had a previously unreleased photodocuentary of the diy punk revolution that stormed the suburbs of the usa in the 80's & fuelled the alternative music establishment of today.
scott johnson is a milwaukee photographer who takes a point & shoot approach to documenting his american life. he exhibits his work LARGE, printing via tradeshow/expo techniques.
pandora vaughan is a uk based landscape artist/ installation artist. she exhibited her tent of wonder, an installation exploring victorian fascination with discovery,
pat graham & melanie standage exhibited their polaroid collection entitled 'past perfect'. showing 624 photos arranged into content themes that exposed their lives as photographers & commenting on a history of photography little told. included candid portraits of pop culture icons such as brett anderson, isaac brock, penny rimbaud, ian mackaye, AIR, sarah cracknell etc.
winston smith brought an exclusive retrospective of original artworks to 96g. his political but emminently pop-tastic collages have long graced the covers of such bands as dead kennedys, green day etc.
rich jacobs curated one of his legendary 'move' shows here in december. featuring 80 artists from the us (and a few from the uk). he brought us all the current artstars of the street art /grafitti scene: ed templeton, barry mcgee, thomas campbell et al.
2nd season to date:
dirty pigeons a group show of bright young painters from nyc depicting an alternate view on contemporary life in america. curated by joanna virello it featured artists: michael cline, kevin willis, daniel lefcourt, alison eliabeth taylor, kat irannejad, gibb slife, harrison hayes & joanna virello
daniel higgs visionary artist from baltimore md brought an exclusive & premier exhibition of original artworks to the uk. lyrical frontman of legendary dischord band lungfish as well as published poet & jaws harp player.
Coming up:
pat graham & melanie standage debut their photoinstallation 'the wildebeest: an allegorical photoinstallation' in july.
bronwen jones aka eve libertine will be releasing her new exhibition 'head on: a study in first impressions' in september. singer/songwriter with CRASS & accomplished performer with the ongoing 'crass collective'.
