Born 1973 Cape Canaveral, FL, lives NYC.
His work depicts America on a perpetual imperative journey of self-discovery, endlessly constructing utopias in an attempt to realize a perfect union with the individual, the group, or a god. Examples of this journey might include teachings found in various evangelical and occultic faiths.Cline paints what seem to be disenfranchized groups and/or individuals in search of a perfect existence who inevitably fall short of reaching their spiritual best. It is in these flawed parables that he finds perfection in both grotesque and beautiful moments. However, it is from these moments, whether flawed or not, that something instructive emerges. For the participants, these moments are seen and unseen, real and fabricated, always ephemeral, and potentially transformative.
Michael Cline’s work has been included in Happy Days Are Here Again at David Zwirner Gallery. Most recently he has had solo shows at Galeria Marta Cervera in Madrid, and Daniel Reich Gallery, New York City. With an upcoming solo exhibition at David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles.
