by Tara Jane O'Neil
96 Gillespie is pleased to present 'Falling Up Doesn't Scare Me' by Portland, Oregon artist Tara Jane O'Neil.
April brings Portland, Oregon artist Tara Jane O'Neil to 96 Gillespie for her
first UK visual art exhibition as well as a much anticipated musical performance at All Tomorrow's Parties.
Hugely respected for her work in both arenas, O'Neil strips back the
complexities of life into raw, vital narratives that cut to the essentials.
A sought after visual artist: her work has shown in galleries in NYC, Barcelona, Tokyo, Kyoto, Toronto, Chicago, Louisville, and Portland and is fiercely collected.
Her artwork weaves traditions of folk artistry with modern illustration &
animation into personal and regional narratives that bring a perspective
on American life both poetic and political.
Her first book of paintings & drawings ‘Who Takes a Feather’ was published by MAP Press, Tokyo, 2004. A second book of her artwork is due for release on Yeti Publishing in 2007.
She works from her garage studio or the back of vehicles – re-using materials at hand – paper, wood, plexi. Her drawings & paintings evidence the merging of disparate worlds, moments transformed into symbol & myth.
Tara Jane has illustrated 2 books of poetry by Cynthia Nelson, and her images have graced the covers of over a dozen albums & books. She has been published in Punk Planet, Copper Press, Projector 7, Venus, the Wire, Magnet, Bant Magazine Istanbul & more.
As a musician & engineer she is an influential figure: a member of 90's
Louisville KY legends 'Rodan'; a contributer to acts & albums from Ida to
Retsin, Sebadoh; she scores films & plays & dance performances; and has a successful solo career that continues to take her around the world
